How You Can Avoid a Communication Breakdown

August 19, 2013/2 Comments/in Communications, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Communication Breakdown Lady Yelling at ManI forget the comedian but I remember the skit. He asks why it is that when we speak to a foreigner who doesn’t speak English, we do stupid stuff like speak more slowly and LOUDER.

“Excuse me. Where’s the nearest gas station.”

“Yo no hablo ingles senor.”

“I SAAIID WHEERRRE IS THE NEARREST GAAAS STAAATION?”

You know what the response will be. It’s funny. Thing is, we do it all day long. We speak to people in languages that are foreign to them. We talk to them about what we care about – not what they care about. We use terms and speak of goals that are incomprehensible at worst and uninspiring at best. There’s only one solution – learn to speak their language.

As a consultant, I was fortunate enough to serve a non-profit hospital system. They were affiliated with the church. Their hospitals were having significant financial troubles. Of course, we came along and found all this money just lying on the floor waiting for someone to pick it up (at least that’s most of the world’s view of consultants – we actually busted our butts crawling through their general ledger looking for places to remove costs without hurting quality of care. Immediately after that, we took the CEO’s watch, took it apart, reassembled it, gave it back to him and told him what time it was).

We found money. A lot. We went into the board meeting and pitched a plan for closing one of the underutilized facilities and saving a bunch of fixed costs. Millions of dollars. It was a no brainer.

We got tossed. Excused. Asked to leave the room immediately.

5 Steps to Fixing the Problems with Your Problem Solving

August 12, 2013/5 Comments/in Business Toolkit, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Everyone thinks they’re a great problem solver.  I mean – who isn’t?  Give me a problem.  I solve it.

The problem is you might be working on the wrong problem.  Or you’ve missed the entire root cause.  Or the solutions you pursue aren’t the highest impact ideas to chase down.

Problem solving is actually pretty simple though.  All you have to do is follow five simple steps.  I promise if you’re rigorous about the problem solving method you use, you’ll improve your chances of solving the right problem, generate solutions that address the true root cause, and select the ideas to pursue that will have the greatest impact.

How do I know this method works?  I’ve personally used it for almost 15 years and we’ve been teaching our clients our Structured Problem Solving course for a long time.  And every time we teach it, participants in the program walk out with great new tools they immediately apply to solve the biggest problems they face.

So how can you become a better problem solver too?  Easy.

Step 1: Pin the Problem

You’ve got to clearly define the issue at hand.  Look at the problem not just from your perspective but from multiple perspectives.  What would your CEO say the problem is?  Your customers?  Your front line associates?  Your finance team?  You get the picture.  Problems look different to different people.

Also look at causality.  All of us have solved a symptom before rather than curing the real disease.  When you fix a symptom, the root problem doesn’t go away – it simply manifests as new symptoms.  Be sure to understand causality.  Once you’ve looked through different lenses and found root causes, you should have a clearly-defined problem.

How to Be a Successful Team Leader

July 10, 2013/0 Comments/in Communications, Guest Blogger, Leadership, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Goose Leading its FlockToday’s post is by Lindsay Traiman of Dale Carnegie Training.

No matter what industry you work in, we all want our teams, departments, and ultimately our entire company to be successful. Each team has an important role to fulfill that is imperative to a company’s success, and it truly takes the right pieces of the puzzle to make the masterpiece that is a great team.

Each member of the team plays a vital role, but the leader of a team has an important responsibility to guide, motivate and inspire others. The most successful businesses and organizations can attribute their accomplishments to effective leadership and teamwork.

Whether you are a manager or team member, it is important to have leadership training and develop the necessary skills to be a good leader. There are several fundamental skills that need to be acquired which include the following:

Effective Communication — Communication is the key to many interactions in life, especially in business. Whether the communication is via email or in person, without effective, clear communication, businesses cannot run smoothly and efficiently. Leaders must find a way to open the lines of communication throughout their entire team. Find ways to increase mutual understanding and to break down potential barriers that could stand in the way of the lines of communication, and don’t be afraid to facilitate the interaction of diverse personalities within the team.

It is also important to remember that listening plays a huge role in effective communication. Allow each member to have a voice and listen to what team members have to say. Remember: each member of the team has a right to question the process, add input, and evaluate the team’s progress.

10 Uncommon Annual Planning Actions that Drive Customer and Employee Growth

July 3, 2013/3 Comments/in Customer Service, Guest Blogger, Strategy, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Chief Customer OfficerToday’s post is by Jeanne Bliss, author of Chief Customer Officer and I Love You More than My Dog (CLICK HERE to get your copies).

Annual planning is the Achilles heel of driving a united customer culture. Every silo or department determines how much money they have to spend, then each creates their individual plans and correlating score cards. Activities frequently focus only on the money – not on the behavior of the organization and what they want to stand for and show up as in the marketplace – based on their decisions and actions.

As you begin your annual planning cycle, here are 10 actions that business leaders and their organizations should focus on first – before the financial planning cycle – to increase customer loyalty and drive profitable business growth.

1. Believe in the integrity of your customers. The majority of business policies and rules are created to protect business from the minority of customers. Be bold, like Connecticut Griffin Hospital, which began sharing hospital records with patients and saw claims against the hospital drop by more than 43 percent. Take a leap of faith and believe that trust is reciprocated by customers when they feel that you trust them.

2. Invest in employee trust. Show your employees that you believe in them. Beloved company Wegmans invests in its employees by training them in the skills that remove rules, regulations, policies, and procedures that pen employees in. This enables Wegmans to throw away the rule book and live by this one edict: “No customer goes away unhappy.” As a result, its margins are higher and profitability more steady because the grocer’s turnover is only 7 percent of employees versus the 19 percent average in its industry.

3. Practice democratic decision making. Give good ideas a chance to prosper no matter where they come from in your organizational chart. Innovation and marketplace differentiation come when employees are respected as part of achieving a mission greater than their set of tasks. W.L. Gore has become a $2.7 billion dollar company, and earned a place on Fortune magazine’s best companies to work for list since its inception, because of how the company unleashes its employees’ spirit and ideas.

Grow Your Business by Not Charging for Your Services

June 3, 2013/10 Comments/in Business Toolkit, Sales, Strategy, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili PeppersWant to grow your business? Give it away.

I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Great tunes especially at 3AM on a Friday night. They’ve also got an incredibly relevant message for how you can grow your business: Give it away, give it away, give it away now! (I’ll spare you the repeats).

No. I haven’t fallen and hit my head again. I routinely give away our stuff. Our services. Our content (ummm… yeah, you’re reading a FREE blog full of our intellectual property and the only price I ask is comments and telling your friends – you are telling your friends, right?). But I give it away deliberately and with purpose.

Have you ever been in that “free seminar” that was nothing more than a disguised sales pitch? Infuriating, huh? Did you buy the speaker’s stuff? Didn’t it grate on you when they’d say “so those are the first two steps in our secret ten step process. Buy the other eight steps for just $999.99!”

Those folks aren’t successful long term. They need to learn how to give it away. So do you. Allow me to explain. Read more

What a Marching Band Can Teach You about Leadership

April 15, 2013/10 Comments/in Leadership, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

I was lucky enough a few months ago to attend the Ohio State vs. Nebraska football game at Ohio State.  It was a raucous affair in which OSU pounded Nebraska into submission.  But that wasn’t the best part.

The best part was the halftime show by The Best Damn Band In The Land.  They showed me something that I knew I needed to share the minute I saw it.  Now, I’m no huge band follower – I was definitely there for the football game.  That said, I know something special when I see it and given I tend to look at the world through a leadership lens, I immediately saw this blog post emerge.

During that halftime show, the OSU band demonstrated what true teamwork looks like and displayed the amazing impact that can be achieved when everyone on the team executes their role flawlessly.  To that end, I invite you to check out the below video of the halftime show.  To get the point I’m about to make, skip ahead to 6:35 into the video and strap yourself in because you’re about to be amazed.

The halftime show was a tribute to video games and what the band pulled off with that galloping horse was nothing short of amazing.  Imagine 100,000 people hanging out during halftime enjoying the show but also chatting with friends and eating hot dogs.  All of a sudden, the horse takes form and people applaud.  Then it starts galloping.  The place went absolutely insane.  And when the horse reared up on its hind legs, you would have thought OSU just won the national championship.  This was teamwork art in action.  You can learn a few things as a leader from their performance:

Your Organization’s Culture Might be Sick but You Can Heal It

March 4, 2013/0 Comments/in Leadership, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Most days we walk through life unaware of conversations occurring around us.  And then there are those times you overhear a conversation that stops you dead in your tracks. You actually have to hit rewind in your brain and ask “did they actually just say that?” Ever have one of those moments? Clearly I did recently.

I was heading to a client site the other morning. As I headed out of my hotel room, I was rumblin’ bumblin’ stumblin’ down the hall (can I get a Chris Berman “holla holla!”?).

My sole mission in life at that point was to get a second cup of coffee from the lobby (and anyone who knows me knows The Rule – don’t speak to me until after my second cup o’ Joe). Clearly my mind was foggier than Yoda’s swamp on Dagobah.

As I passed two housekeepers who were conversing in the hallway, I heard it – the statement that shocked me more than hearing “I’m your father Luke.”

One housekeeper said “Just look busy when she goes by. That’ll keep her off your ass for the rest of the morning.” Note: this was VERBATIM!

Despite the caffeine-deficiency-induced lack of a solid connection between my brain and my eardrum at that point, I was still able to process the enormity of this statement. “Just look busy.” Wow. I was floored.

7 Questions to Ask When Finding a Mentor

February 20, 2013/1 Comment/in Business Toolkit, Career, Entrepreneur, Guest Blogger, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Today’s post is by Gwen Stewart of Outbounding.com. Here’s Gwen…

It doesn’t matter if you’re a freelancer, a small business owner, a successful entrepreneur or a corporate executive in a Fortune 500 company—a business mentor can often provide you with advice, encouragement, or insight, helping to improve your business skills or ensuring that you stay firmly rooted on the path to success. Finding a mentor may seem like a difficult task, but by asking yourself or your proposed mentor a few questions, you’ll be better equipped to determine if that particular individual is well suited to be a great mentor, or if you should keep looking.

1. What Are You Looking For in a Mentor?

This is a question you first need to ask yourself before finding a mentor. Do you need someone to offer you advice on starting your business and keeping it running smoothly? Or would you be better served by a mentor that can offer you encouragement and show you how to stay motivated? Perhaps both? By understanding what your ultimate goals and business objectives are, as well as your strengths and weaknesses, you’ll have a better idea of what you need in a mentor.

2. Does Your Mentor Listen to You?

A good mentor can offer you great advice, but they also need to listen to you. If you are talking to a proposed mentor and feel that they are not really listening to your ideas, questions or concerns, then they might not be the best choice. How can someone help you if they aren’t really listening to you? Sure, they might still possess tons of experience and be able to provide you with good advice, but each business is unique, and you want advice that takes your own business and personal issues into account.

3. Is Your Mentor Positive or Negative?

Best of thoughtLEADERS 2012: A 55 Gallon Drum of Awesomesauce

December 17, 2012/0 Comments/in Balanced Lifestyle, Books, Business Toolkit, Career, Communications, Entrepreneur, Guest Blogger, Innovation, Leadership, Project Management, Sales, Social Media, Strategy, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

Mike Figliuolo TrophyThis year is almost over so it’s time for the year in review list of the BEST posts we’ve published in 2012.  It’s time for the 2012 edition of The Figgies (here are the 2009, 2010 and 2011 editions).

This is an annual event here at the thoughtLEADERS Blog.  Here’s how it goes: this list is comprised of our most viewed, most forwarded, quirkiest, most provocative work as judged by you the readers. There’s also a kicker bonus post on the list just for good measure.

Enjoy. Share. We’ve loved writing them. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading them. I don’t ask a lot of you folks so I have two small requests as your holiday gift to me (you are getting me something, right?):

1. Invite all your coworkers, friends, and family to come check out the blog and become readers. The only way we get better is by raising everyone’s game. I’m not asking a lot here.  If you found this blog helpful at all this year, here’s your chance to return the favor for all our hard work. Just email folks and tell ’em to come take a look.

2. Pick up a copy of One Piece of Paper: The Simple Approach to Powerful Personal Leadership (especially if you’re looking for last-minute holiday gifts for bosses, team members, or your mom – she’ll love it).  Yes – I know I talk a lot about the book but it’s not for the money (I would have made more money if I worked in a sweat shop in Asia making sneakers).  I talk a lot about it because I’m evangelical about the topic.  Buy it.  Read it.  In the words of Roland Smith (CEO of Wendy’s) “It could change your life.”

Thanks for your incredible support in ’12 and best wishes for ’13! We hope to be a part of your future success!

Enough preamble. Here’s the best stuff we’ve written all year:

Go Ahead and Make Mistakes – But Not Really

October 22, 2012/4 Comments/in Business Toolkit, Leadership, Training /by Mike Figliuolo

As leaders, we say we want our people to be empowered and to go out and make decisions.  We say we’re okay with them making mistakes and we’ll still support them making decisions on their own.

But not really.

I’m lucky to have a huge leadership lab in the form of the SmartBrief on Leadership weekly pulse poll.  Every week I ask a leadership-related question and thousands of people respond to those polls.  Sometimes I get a little sneaky and conduct my own experiments over the period of a few weeks.  I conducted one of these experiments recently.

First I asked “Would you rather have a team member make decisions and make mistakes or make no decisions and leave that up to you?”

Unsurprisingly, all us empowering leaders were eager to give our team members the latitude to make decisions and make mistakes.  96% of respondents said they’d rather have a team member make a decision even if they make mistakes.  A measly 4% of respondents wanted the team to leave all decisions up to them.

I observed we want our team members to take the initiative, take action and move things forward, even if they make mistakes. It is incumbent upon us as leaders to ensure that, when they do make mistakes, we realize we gave them the latitude to take action — handling the mistakes in that context accordingly. While we need to hold them accountable for the mistake, we also need to ensure they learn from it and do so in a way that we don’t make them afraid to make more mistakes in the future.  Heck, I believe so strongly in this notion of decision making and empowerment that I dedicated a whole chapter of One Piece of Paper to the topic (grab a copy here and check out Chapter 13).

The following week I conducted the second part of my experiment.
